Workshop takeaways: Toward virtual world and Web 4.0 governance – action oriented workshop

On November 26, the European Commission, PPMI (part of the Verian Group), and TNO co-hosted the action-oriented workshop “Toward virtual worlds and Web 4.0”. The event brought together a diverse group of stakeholders, including academia, policymakers, industry professionals, technical community, public sector and civil society representatives. Participants joined from across the globe, representing over 25 countries, including Germany, Bangladesh, USA, Moldova, Egypt, and Italy.

The workshop built on insights from our previous sessions, exploring governance principles and technology challenges for virtual worlds and Web 4.0. Participants engaged in collaborative discussions to validate earlier findings and identify actionable next steps and recommendations for governance frameworks that align with emerging digital environments.

The session was facilitated by Rūta Gabalina, Barbora Kudzmanaitė, Ming Chen, Tom Koninck, Aiym Sarmanova and Aleksandra Wójtowicz.

We sincerely thank all participants for their invaluable contributions to this important discussion. Your feedback will further shape the principles and preliminary areas for action.

The session slides together with the results of the collaborative sessions are available for download below.

The workshop took place in the context of the pilot project exploring the future governance of Web 4.0 and virtual worlds led by PPMI (part of the Verian group) in collaboration with TNO for DG CNECT. The project seeks to evaluate key advancements in internet technologies relevant to Web 4.0 and virtual worlds, while also laying the foundation for a global dialogue on various aspects of their governance.
